We were craving for Southern comfort food and decided to make Buttermilk Fried Chicken & Waffles! How can you not love it? Nowadays, we are opting for healthier versions of foods so we decided to air fry the chicken! It's less oily and comes out just as amazing as deep frying it. We used our Ninja Max XL to make this delicious, crispy, and juicy air fried chicken!
Buttermilk Fried Chicken recipe is adapted from Sweet Tea and Thyme's "Authentic Buttermilk-Brined Southern Fried Chicken".
Ingredients
For the Brine:
6-8 pieces of skin-on Chicken thighs, drums, or wings
2 cups Buttermilk
2 teaspoon Paprika
1 Tbsp hot sauce
1 Tbsp Garlic, minced
1 Tbsp Onion powder
1/2 Tbsp Thyme
1/2 Rosemary
1 Tbsp Sea salt
2 teaspoon freshly ground Black pepper
For the seasoned Flour:
2 cups All-purpose flour
1/3 cup Cornstarch
2 teaspoon Baking powder
2 teaspoon Paprika
2 Tbsp Garlic powder
2 Tbsp Onion powder
1 Tbsp dried oregano
2 teaspoon chili powder
1-2 teaspoon sea salt
1 Tbsp freshly ground Black pepper
For the Crispy Waffles, we used this recipe from Inspired Taste.
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine buttermilk, paprika, hot sauce, garlic, onion powder, thyme, rosemary, sea salt, and black pepper. Place chicken into the bowl and soak it completely. Cover and Brine the chicken in the fridge overnight.
Combine all ingredients for flour mixture on a plate. Remove each piece of brined chicken one at a time and dredge it in the seasoned flour. Coat completely & press into the flour to adhere. Rest for 5 minutes then dredge the chicken in flour again for a 2nd coating. Rest for another 10 minutes before air frying.
Preheat air fryer at 350F for 3 minutes. Spray basket with avocado oil. Place the coated chicken in the air fryer in single layer (don't overcrowd or else it won't cook evenly. You may have to work in several batches).
Air fry at 350F for 20 minutes. Half way through, open basket and lightly spray avocado oil on chicken, then it over). Continue to air fry until done.
Meanwhile, make the waffles. If you're making several, you can place the made waffles in the oven on low temp. to keep them warm while you make more!
When chicken is done, turn the temperature up to 400F for 5 minutes. If thermometer shows 165F, it's done.
Transfer the fried chicken & waffle onto a plate then drizzle some maple syrup. (We loved the syrup with the chicken!)
