Baked Puff Pastry Apple Roses

Went apple picking awhile ago and wanted to do something different with our 1/2 bushel rather than the classic apple pie. We decided to make these beautiful Apple Roses! The first time we made our own dough but it took quite some time and honestly wasn't worth the hassle. We learned that we could use Puff Pastry sheets and it was a game changer! The process was much easier and quicker. Each box of puff pastry comes with 2 pastry sheets and each sheet can make 6 apple roses. This recipe is inspired by the Pepperidge Farm's Apple Roses recipe - you can modify it like what we did.

Ingredients

Servings: 6

  • 2 Red Delicious apples, thinly sliced

  • 1/2 a lemon, juiced

  • cold water - enough to cover all of the sliced apples in a bowl

  • Ground Cinnamon

  • 1/3 cup Maple syrup

  • 1 Puff Pastry Sheet, thawed at room temperature

  • Avocado oil

  • Flour

Instructions

  1. Prepare a large bowl with lemon & water.

  2. Slice apple in 1/2, remove the core then thinly slice the apple. The thinner the better. Soak sliced apples in the lemon water immediately to prevent browning.

  3. Microwave the whole bowl of soaked apples + lemon water on high for 3-4 minutes to soften it. (The softer the better to roll later).

  4. Unwrap the Pastry sheet over a floured work station. Use a rolling pin to stretch the dough out to 12x9 inch rectangle. Use a pastry scraper/chopper, cut the dough into 6 rectangle strips (each 2x9 inch),

  5. Microwave the 1/3 cup Maple syrup + 1 Tbsp water for 1 minute (thins out & makes it easier to spread on the dough). Preheat oven to 350F and grease muffin pan with oil.

  6. Brush hot maple syrup on pastry sheet. Overlap apples on top part of the dough from one end to the other -- red skin sticking out of the sheet. Sprinkle cinnamon all over the dough and apples.

  7. Fold bottom part of the dough up to the middle of the apple. Roll from one end to the other while trying to keep overlap apples in place. Pinch the dough at the end to seal it. Place in muffin pan. Continue making more apple roses.

  8. Bake at 350F for 40-45 mins until pastry is fully cooked (especially the inside). Check at 30 mins. If top part starts to burn, place aluminum foil over it for the last 15 minutes of baking.

Notes

  • The apple roses tastes best when it's still warm! Otherwise you can place it in an air tight container at room temp. Lasts for a few days.

  • You can substitute cinnamon & maple syrup if you want. Some recipes have used apricot jam, honey, or caramel... etc.

  • If you don't want to microwave the apples, you can simmer it in water on the stove until it softens.

If you make this recipe, we'd love to see it! Tag us at @NY.Foodie on your stories & posts.
